“…listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Deuteronomy 30:20
As I slowly made my way through my neighborhood this evening, there were three children in the street. On every nice day from now until winter, the same three will be doing exactly what they were doing today. Two were on their bikes riding unsteadily ahead of one girl who trailed behind on foot. She was not obviously the oldest of the three, she wasn’t even the biggest, but she was obviously the one in charge of making sure no one encountered danger. The two on their bicycles were too far ahead to hear the girl’s warning that I was coming. Three times she yelled, “Car!” each time louder than the last. At her last cry, both riders turned to look in her direction, forgetting for just a second about the parked cars on the street. They did everything they could to keep from falling off their bicycles, getting hit by me, and nose-diving into the side of a parked car; they were successful on all three accounts though they did not know I would turn before passing them.
As I turned into the driveway, I was reminded of how often I get ahead of the One in charge of keeping me out of danger. We are all creatures of habit; we do things without thinking much of the time, disregarding the notion that God might be warning of dating the wrong person, trusting the nice guy next door etc, spending too much time on the internet… We shrug off the nagging in our heads and say, “Ah, I’ve been down this road before, I know what I’m doing.”
How many times has someone warned you about something but you were too far ahead in your own experience and pride to really listen? How many times have you almost run into the wrong investment, been hit from seemingly nowhere by the wrong choice, or been side-swiped with frustration, anxiety, or depression all because you didn’t hear the One In Charge telling you to take care, listen for His Voice, and follow His lead?
If you’ve been moving along and nothing seems to be in your way, know that it is the enemy’s job to drop something in your path when you least expect it. It is his objective to get you to stop walking your walk; to quit running your race (John 10:10 – The thief [the enemy]comes only to steal and kill and destroy…”). But, if you are close enough to the Lord, you will hear Him when He tells you to zig instead of zag. You will hear when He says stop and wait.
God knows what the future holds for you and wants you to be blessed. He sees the distractions and possible dangers that are about to hit you from all sides and wants you to be safe and secure with him. (II Thessalonians 3:3 – “But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one”).
Is He calling you now? Are you listening?
