The Art of Submission

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-24

Submission, by strict definition is: The act of submitting to the power of another/To yield or surrender (oneself) to the will or authority of another/ To subject to a condition or process./ To commit (something) to the consideration or judgment of another.

Submission ought not to be seen as an act of weakness, but strength of will; not disowning oneself, but honoring another.

Submission is:

  • Functional– It distinguishes our roles and the work we are called to do.
  • Relational– It is a an acknowledgement of another’s value.
  • Reciprocal – it is a mutual cooperation with one another.
  • Universal – It is an acknowledgement by the church the Jesus Christ is Lord of all.

Submission ought not be demanded, it is a voluntary act of cooperation out of love, honor, and respect, for the Lord, and then to another person including unbelievers. Submitting to unbelievers is challenging, but is a necessary part of witness.  We are not called to submit to anyone or anything to the point of compromising ourselves, or our relationship with God. However, we must look to every opportunity to serve in the Spirit of God.

Be good, be careful, and be a blessing to someone today!
